Altcoin Market Cap, Circulating Supply, and Diluted Value
Market capitalization is a useful reference, but it is not cash in a project and it does not measure executable liquidity. Read it together with supply definitions, unlock timing, and market depth.
Circulating market cap
Estimated current price × estimated circulating supply.
Fully diluted value
Current price × a broader supply figure, often maximum or total supply.
Executable value
The amount a market can absorb depends on spreads, depth, pools, and available venues—not headline market cap.
One token, three different questions
These figures are fictional and demonstrate the formulas only.
| Input or measure | Hypothetical value | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $2.00 | Marginal market estimate at the observation time. |
| Circulating supply | 100 million | Provider estimate of transferable or economically circulating units. |
| Circulating market cap | $200 million | Size reference based on the circulating estimate. |
| Maximum supply | 500 million | Broader potential unit count if the cap is enforceable. |
| Fully diluted value | $1 billion | Scenario reference using current price and maximum supply. |
| Depth within 2% | $80,000 | A limited snapshot of execution capacity, not implied by market cap. |
Why trackers disagree
Locked, vested, staked, bridged, treasury, burned, and inactive tokens can be classified differently. Contract migrations and governance changes add complexity.
Do not mix figures without checking methodology and timestamps.
Time changes the relationship between circulating and diluted supply.
Maximum supply may depend on immutable code, governance, or upgrade control.
Market-cap checklist
- Confirm the contract and chain.
- Record the price source and timestamp.
- Compare circulating, total, and maximum supply.
- Label locked and treasury allocations.
- List major unlocks and emissions.
- Review liquidity separately.
- Use ranges when classification is uncertain.
