Altcoin and Token Categories
Categories are research shortcuts, not permanent identities. Many projects span several functions, so use the closest peer group and record where the comparison breaks down.
Smart-contract platforms
Base networks for applications, execution, and settlement.
Research: Fees, staking, validator economics, client diversity, application demand.
Layer 2 and scaling
Systems that move execution or data away from a base chain.
Research: Proofs, data availability, sequencing, exits, bridges, upgrades, token role.
DeFi tokens
Tokens connected to exchanges, lending, stablecoins, staking, or derivatives.
Research: Fee flow, incentives, collateral, governance, composability, smart-contract risk.
Oracle and data networks
Systems that deliver external data, indexing, or cross-chain messages.
Research: Publisher or node concentration, security budget, demand, integrations, failure handling.
Storage and compute
Networks coordinating storage, rendering, compute, or other resources.
Research: Real job demand, provider economics, quality assurance, payments, competition.
Payments and transfer
Networks or tokens used for settlement and value transfer.
Research: Liquidity, counterparties, issuer or validator structure, regulatory access, adoption.
Community and meme tokens
Assets whose value is strongly linked to community attention and culture.
Research: Concentration, liquidity, contract control, development continuity, narrative risk.
Governance and coordination
Tokens used to vote, delegate, fund ecosystems, or coordinate operators.
Research: Actual authority, participation, delegation, capture risk, treasury control, execution.
Category labels should determine the evidence
Transaction counts may matter for a base network, while repeat borrowers matter for lending, active liquidity matters for an exchange, and delivered jobs matter for a compute network. Avoid ranking unrelated systems with one metric.
What service does the system provide?
Which evidence demonstrates durable, fee-paying use?
Does system success create required token demand or control?
Projects can cross categories
A layer 2 can include a governance token, an exchange, a bridge, and a data-availability dependency. A DeFi token can also secure an oracle or insurance module. Use multiple labels but preserve one primary comparison set.
When a project does not fit a peer group, explain the mismatch instead of forcing it into a score.
